Excellence in Servanthood

An Annual Award for Laypersons

Sponsored by the Deacons of the Diocese

 As a way to recognize and honor members of the laity who work diligently as volunteers in a variety of ministries throughout our diocese, the deacons of the Diocese of Georgia wish to institute the “Excellence in Servanthood” award.  This award will be presented annually at diocesan convention with the first presentation being at the 2010 diocesan convention.

 The award will be conferred upon an Episcopal layperson in the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia who has distinguished her/himself as a volunteer in an outreach ministry which is currently active within this diocese.  The ministry may have branched into other dioceses as a result of the work of the layperson, but must currently be an active ministry within our diocese. It may be a ministry initiated by the layperson, or involvement in an existing agency in the community.

 Each nomination must include:

 1.      Permission of the layperson to be nominated.

2.      A fully completed Nomination Form, available from the diocesan office, any member of The Deacon’s Formation Council, or the diocesan website, www.georgia.anglican.org.

3.      A letter of recommendation from the nominee’s rector/vicar.

4.      A letter of recommendation from the nominee’s supervisor in the agency or ministry in which s/he is active or, if there is no supervisor, from a co-worker (either volunteer or agency staff person) of the nominee.

5.      An essay of no more than 500 words written by the nominator, expressing why he or she believes that this person should be given the award. The typewritten narrative shall describe:

a.      the layperson’s participation in his/her chosen ministry, highlighting areas of success and accomplishments;

b.      the number of years of involvement;

c.       how the layperson has recruited participation of others in the community or parish;

d.      how this ministry or service has benefited others.

 Nominations need to be submitted between September 1st and November 15th of the year preceding the award year. The Selection Committee, comprised of The Deacon’s Formation Council, will not consider any application which does not contain all of the specified requirements or is submitted after the deadline.

 The person to be honored with this award is urged to attend diocesan convention to receive the award and be recognized by the Church body gathered.  The honoree shall receive a plaque and a $500 donation to her/his outreach ministry.  This financial gift shall be funded by the Deacons of the Diocese of Georgia.
